Aze Von Helder

First recording session

Wandeclayt M.

Herr Walter
The AIRE·N·TERRE history starts in Recife, in 1992, when Wandeclayt M. and Aze Von Helder (both studying Electronics) first met in the corridors of Federal Technical School. They were already into EBM, Technopop and Goth at that time and had many things in common like the interest for astronomy, technology and new challenges - to say nothing of similar stories to explain their catapulting into such musical styles. Their favorite acts were also the same: Kraftwerk (who they refer to as "The Machines' Father"), Front 242, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, New Order, Anne Clark, 808 State and Nitzer Ebb, just to mention a few. That perfect match created a big friendship between the boys and led them to begin an interchange of ideas (and ideals) that changed their lives and the way they see music completely.

However only a few years later, then with more than simply tastes in common (they had gotten some musical knowledge and instruments), Wandeclayt and Aze gathered to form the group. Since none of them had written a song yet, they decided that making covers would be the appropriate beginning. But the first rehearsals (at the tiny Aze's apartment) made clear that they would need a real vocalist if they actually wanted to go on with their project. Thus, von Helder, a huge DM fan, invited his old [DM maniac] friend Caesar Gomes to join the group and start a new phase of rehearsals.

Besides DM fan, Caesar was also an aviation freak. His favorite hobbies were reading articles about aircraft, watching landings and take-offs and hearing the pilots air band. It had an important role for the group's name choosing since it came from Caesar the idea of AIRE·N TERRE. In fact, his suggestion was Air Inter, which is the name of a French airline he read about on a magazine once. Nevertheless, in order to avoid future problems, they decided to change the spelling. According to the members, "There's no special meaning or reason for the band's name. We only adopted it because we liked the way it sounded like. No matter which spelling it would have."

The following rehearsals were captured on cassette, VHS and photographic film and are considered as the group's first official session to date. That day they recorded two Depeche Mode classics: "Never Let Me Down Again" and "Behind The Wheel". Both among their favorite DM songs.

A few months later Caesar Gomes left the group and A·N·T began to work on their own compositions. The result was two demos: Roses Around and Chain Reaktion, written by Von Helder and M. respectively. To help with the production and edition of those tracks, they recruited Herr Walter, another Aze's friend very familiarized with sound processing and recording techniques.

In the following year, due to the obligations their technical careers require, the duo wasn't able to meet as often.  Both Aze and Wandeclayt were living in different cities (New York and Sta Maria, southeast Brazil). As a way to overcome the obvious problem caused by that separation they re-thought the project and their strategies. A new and cutting-edge approach was then adopted.... Something that has entirely changed the AIRE·N·TERRE modus operandi.

Using a powerful arsenal of software, hardware, instruments and protocols they developed a structure to allow them to communicate, create, interchange and produce their music efficiently over a network enviroment. They called that structure Chain Re-akords Virtual Studios (CRVS) and it's under its rules and possibilities that the lads have been working now. The first CRVS tracks were Nordloewe and Nuklear Winter, both entirely conceived, distributed and promoted online. Later, as a result of the new tracks release, the group was invited by the Brazilian e-zine FiberOnline to take part in its electro compilation Clang!, released in the spring of 2000. Clang! was the first AIRE·N·TERRE appearance in the specialized media and served to showcase the group to a larger audience.

It looks like after so many adversities, they can finally see the roses around.
